With Big Data, you can solve problems in science, society and business including population growth, transport, security, medical technology, trade and commerce.

All sectors will have a demand for creative people with a background in quantitative analysis who can look for strategic insights in massive data sets, using techniques in data mining, data visualisation, data analysis, data manipulation and data discovery.

Study Opportunities (offered by UOW in Australia)

Students in the UOW programme at SIM are eligible to transfer to Wollongong campus but subject to separate application and enrolment process. Graduates can apply to enrol in the Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) programme at Wollongong campus.

Teaching Faculty

The programme is taught in Singapore, with UOW academics teaching in the final year

Mode of Delivery

Classes include face-to-face lectures, tutorials and lab sessions.

Classes are in 3-hour blocks: 8:30 – 11:30am, 12noon – 3pm,or 3:30 – 6:30pm.

Intensive lectures in the final year are delivered in a continuous block of seven days for each subject, and occasionally will be held on Saturday.

Students typically study two subjects in one session.

To be awarded the Bachelor of Computer Science (Big Data) degree, student must complete, or exempted from completing (depending on their advanced standing status), a total of 23 modules comprising of core modules, elective modules and one final year project.

Candidature Period

Maximum 3 times the duration for completion under a standard full-time load, subject to meeting ongoing course progression rules.

Minimum Class Size

Minimum class size to commence: 24 students. Students will be informed 1 month before class starts.

Entry Requirements

  • 3 GCE ‘A’ level / 3 H2 passes plus 1 H1 pass with a minimum aggregate of 9 points where A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1 (for H1 apply half the value)*
  • Diploma: 3-year diploma from local polytechnic or its equivalent.

*Minimum Aggregate scores in the qualifications mentioned are required for entry and will be assessed by UOW.

Applicants may be admitted to different credit exemptions based on their academic results.

Exemption Eligibility

Exemptions are normally granted automatically to students with relevant background. Block exemptions may be granted to students with relevant diplomas from the local polytechnics and universities.

All modules previously studied will be evaluated and compared with the requirements of the student’s programme of study and a block exemption granted where appropriate.

To obtain maximum credit exemption, applicants must have GPA of 2.0 or more (out of 4.0). Applicants with GPA below 2.0 will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Assessment & Exams

Students are normally assessed by continuous assessments in the following form:

  • Assignments
  • Class tests
  • Laboratory exercises
  • Practical laboratory tests
  • Presentations
  • Project
  • Tutorial exercises

Some assignments and presentations will be group-based. Assessment may have a minimum achievement requirement necessary to pass the subject.  Most modules have a final examination at the end of semester.

Academic Progress

Students are to pass all subjects within the current year of study before proceeding to the next year of study.  For modules with pre-requisites, students may be required to meet the pre-requisites before undertaking the modules.

Attendance requirement

Local students: 80%
International students: 90%

Award & Graduation

The Bachelor of Computer Science (Big Data) contain common subjects for Year 1 and 2, plus a 48-credit point programme in the final year which consists of 6 coursework subjects each worth 6 credit points and a final project worth 12 credit points.

On successful completion, graduates receive the Bachelor of Computer Science (Big Data) awarded by the University of Wollongong.
