University Of Birmingham Graduates Told: Be Grateful. Be Intellectually Curious. Be Present.
At a recent SIM - University of Birmingham (UoB) Degree Congregation on 3 November, SIM Governing Council Chairman, Mr Tan Soo Jin gave graduates advice on how to achieve success and fulfilment in their professional and personal lives.
Speaking to some 300 graduates including Master’s graduates, Mr Tan was sharing from his rich experience in talent recruitment and development at Gattie-Tan Soo Jin Management Consultants Pte Ltd. He outlined three key factors:
- Be grateful: “There is an African saying that if you want to run fast, run alone but if you want to run far, run with others. We would not be where we are today if not for the people who have run the journey with us, guiding and encouraging us, or making sacrifices so we can focus on getting to the finishing line…It is when we realise we can’t run alone that we remember to be humble.”
- Be intellectually curious: “The most important inventions and discoveries in history came about because someone was curious enough. Curiosity develops wide interests and knowledge which enable us to synthesise ideas across divergent fields in new ways, and discover patterns from disparate information to generate novel solutions.”
- Be Present: “Resist the temptation to build your life around that smartphone or lose yourself totally in the digital. Otherwise we will miss out on the little things that are taking place before our eyes, and the connections we can forge with the people physically around us. When we are not present in the real lives of people around us, we cannot form strong relationships.”
This year marks the eighth year of the SIM and UoB partnership which offers six programmes in Business Management, International Business and Business Administration. To date, the partnership has produced 1,200 graduates who join the 220,000-strong UoB alumni around the world.
The Birmingham Business School is one of an elite group of business schools that can lay claim to holding the 'triple-crown' accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the Association of MBAs and the European Quality Improvement System.
